The numerical reasoning test tips that raise scores are not maths tips. The arithmetic in a graduate test is GCSE level. The difficulty comes from three things: you get more data than you need, less time than is comfortable, and wrong answer options built from the mistakes candidates actually make. So the tips that work are reading tips and timing tips. Read the question before you look at the table. Decide which two numbers you need. Estimate the answer before you calculate it, so a wrong option cannot look reasonable. Work in one pass, flag anything that takes more than about 90 seconds, and come back. Most tests are not negatively marked, so never leave a blank. This guide gives you the method, two full worked questions, and the traps to rehearse.

What is actually being measured in a numerical reasoning test?
Numerical reasoning tests measure data interpretation under time pressure, not mathematical knowledge. A typical graduate test runs about 20 questions in 20 minutes in multiple-choice format with four or five options. You are shown a table, a bar chart, or a short financial extract, then asked a question that depends on a small part of it. The skills tested are percentages, ratios, rates, unit conversion and reading a chart correctly.
That is why the biggest score gains come from process rather than revision. If you can already do 36,000 divided by 240,000, you do not need more maths. You need to stop reading the whole table, stop recalculating numbers you have already worked out, and stop falling for the distractor that uses the wrong base.

How should you manage the clock?
Work in two passes.
Pass one. Give every question a personal ceiling of roughly 90 seconds. If you are not close by then, flag it and move on. Marks are equal, so a hard question is worth exactly the same as an easy one and costs three times as much time.
Pass two. Spend what is left on the flagged items, hardest last.
Final ten seconds. Fill every blank with a guess.

The stage most people skip is the estimate. It is also the one that catches the base error, the units error and the decimal error at the same time.
Worked example 1: multi-stage percentage change
Data. Northern region revenue: Q1 was 240,000 GBP. Q2 was 276,000 GBP. In Q3, revenue fell by 8 percent against Q2.
Question. By what percentage was Q3 revenue higher than Q1 revenue?
A) 5.8 percent B) 7.0 percent C) 8.0 percent D) 15.0 percent
Worked solution.
Step 1. Q1 to Q2 change. The rise is 276,000 minus 240,000, which is 36,000. Divide by the starting value: 36,000 divided by 240,000 equals 0.15, so 15 percent.
Step 2. Q2 to Q3 change. A fall of 8 percent means a factor of 0.92. Q3 equals 276,000 times 0.92, which is 253,920 GBP.
Step 3. Q1 to Q3 change. The rise is 253,920 minus 240,000, which is 13,920. Divide by 240,000, which gives 0.058, so 5.8 percent. The answer is A.
The trap. Option B is 15 minus 8, which equals 7. Percentages do not add across stages, because the second one uses a different base. The correct shortcut is to multiply the factors: 1.15 times 0.92 equals 1.058, which is a 5.8 percent rise. Learn the multiply-the-factors habit and this whole question type collapses into one line.
Worked example 2: ratio share and the change in the total
Data. A team budget of 84,000 GBP is split between software and training in the ratio 5 to 2. The following year the training budget rises by 25 percent. The software budget is unchanged.
Question. What is the percentage increase in the total budget, to one decimal place?
A) 5.0 percent B) 7.1 percent C) 12.5 percent D) 25.0 percent
Worked solution.
Step 1. Total parts equal 5 plus 2, which is 7. One part equals 84,000 divided by 7, which is 12,000 GBP.
Step 2. Software equals 5 parts, so 60,000 GBP. Training equals 2 parts, so 24,000 GBP. Check: 60,000 plus 24,000 equals 84,000. Correct.
Step 3. New training equals 24,000 times 1.25, which is 30,000 GBP. New total equals 60,000 plus 30,000, which is 90,000 GBP.
Step 4. The increase is 6,000 divided by 84,000, which is 0.0714, so 7.1 percent. The answer is B.
The trap. Option D applies the 25 percent to the whole budget. The rise applies to one part of it only. Always find the value of one part first. That single habit fixes most ratio questions, and it is covered in more depth in our percentages and ratios guide.
Which mistakes cost the most marks?
Four errors account for most lost marks, and all four are rehearsable.
- Wrong base. Dividing the change by the new value instead of the original. Say the base out loud: “as a percentage of what?”
- Percentage points versus percent. A move from 12 percent to 15 percent is 3 percentage points and a 25 percent relative rise. Test writers use both words deliberately.
- Units and scale. Table headers often say “figures in thousands” or “USD millions”. Read the header before the cells.
- Rounding too early. Round only at the final step, and only to the precision the question asks for.
How much practice do you actually need?
Volume matters less than review. A common pattern that works: three or four full timed sets, and after each one, rework every question you got wrong until you can explain the distractor. If you cannot say why the wrong option was attractive, you have not learned the question.
Practise on the same equipment you will use on the day. Most graduate numerical tests allow a basic calculator, but the invitation email is the authority, so check it. Have scrap paper and write down intermediate values, because recalculating a number you already had is a common and invisible time leak.

What should you do in the 24 hours before the test?
Do not learn anything new. Do one short timed set to warm up, not a full battery. Check your invitation email for the calculator rule, the time limit and whether the test is adaptive. Set up a quiet room, a wired connection if you have one, a charger, paper, a pen and a calculator. Then stop.
On the day, the first two questions are worth the same as the last two. Do not burn four minutes proving you can solve question one.

Are numerical reasoning tests negatively marked?
Usually not. Most publishers score the number correct with no deduction for wrong answers, which means a blank is strictly worse than a guess. Check the instruction screen before you start, because a small number of tests do apply a penalty.
Can I use a calculator?
Most graduate numerical reasoning tests permit a basic calculator. Policies vary by employer, so read the instructions in your invitation email rather than assuming.
How long should I spend per question?
Around 60 seconds is typical for a 20-question, 20-minute test. Give yourself a 90-second ceiling in pass one and flag anything longer.
What score do I need to pass?
There is rarely a fixed pass mark. Scores are usually converted into a percentile against a norm group, and employers set the cut-off for the role.
Is numerical reasoning the same as a maths test?
No. The arithmetic is school level. The test measures how quickly and accurately you pull the right numbers out of a dense data set and interpret them correctly.
Does practice actually improve the score?
Practice mostly improves speed and reduces avoidable errors, which is where most marks are lost. It does not change your underlying ability, but that is not what separates candidates at the margin.
