The Amazon Work Simulation assessment puts you inside a fictional Amazon team for around an hour and asks you to do the job rather than describe it. You read internal messages, interpret data, choose between competing priorities and write short responses. Amazon’s own guidance for university software roles lists the Work Simulation at an average of 60 minutes, alongside a Coding Assessment at an average of 70 minutes, a Workstyles Assessment at an average of 15 minutes and a 5 minute feedback survey, and tells full-time candidates to set aside up to two hours of uninterrupted time for the online assessment. The simulation is not a knowledge test. It scores judgement, and the judgement it scores is defined by Amazon’s 16 Leadership Principles.

What is the Amazon Work Simulation assessment?

The Work Simulation is a scenario-based module in Amazon’s online assessment. You are placed in a role and given realistic artefacts: emails, chat messages, dashboards, customer complaints, a schedule that does not fit. You then choose or write responses. It is closer to an in-tray or e-tray exercise than to a maths test.

Amazon publishes the module list and average timings for university software roles. Full-time candidates see a Coding Assessment (average 70 minutes), a Workstyles Assessment (average 15 minutes), a Work Simulation (average 60 minutes) and a Feedback Survey (average 5 minutes), and Amazon advises setting aside up to two hours of uninterrupted time. Internship assessments are described as taking about 90 minutes and list the Coding Assessment, Workstyles Assessment and Feedback Survey without the Work Simulation. Other Amazon job families use their own versions of the simulation, so check the invitation you were sent.

If your process also includes a data-heavy section, drill the arithmetic separately. Ten minutes on five free timed numerical questions is enough to get the mental maths moving before you start.

What does the assessment measure?

Amazon’s interview process is built around its 16 Leadership Principles, and candidates are pointed at them as core preparation material. The simulation applies the same lens earlier in the funnel. The principles most visible in simulation tasks are these.

Two of these pull against each other on purpose. Bias for Action says speed matters and many decisions are reversible. Dive Deep says stay connected to the detail. A good simulation answer shows you know which one the situation calls for: move fast on a reversible decision, verify first on an irreversible one.

Sample question 1: prioritising a busy inbox

It is 09:00. You are covering a delivery station queue. Four items are waiting and you have time to start one.

  • A: A customer says a fragile parcel arrived broken. They have a replacement due tomorrow already booked.
  • B: A dashboard shows one route’s on-time rate dropped from 96 percent to 71 percent overnight. No one has flagged it.
  • C: A colleague asks you to review their slide deck for a meeting next week.
  • D: A supplier email asks for confirmation of an order quantity by end of day.

Which do you start first, and what is the correct order?

Worked solution. Sort by two questions: is a customer being harmed right now, and is the problem still growing?

B is first. A route running at 71 percent on-time is harming customers continuously, nobody has noticed, and every hour makes it worse. Starting here is Customer Obsession plus Ownership, because the task is unowned. D is second: it has a hard deadline today and takes minutes, so clearing it prevents a second problem tomorrow. A is third: the customer is unhappy, but a replacement is already booked, so the immediate harm is contained and a short acknowledgement is enough for now. C is last: it is genuinely useful, but it is a week away and no one is affected by a delay.

The order is B, D, A, C. The common wrong answer is A first, because it is the most emotionally urgent item. The simulation rewards the candidate who spots that the unflagged systemic problem is the bigger customer issue.

Sample question 2: reading the data before you act

A weekly report shows returns for one product category.

A colleague writes: “Good news, returns fell 16 percent this week.” Do you agree, and what should you say?

Worked solution. The raw count did fall: 400 to 336 is a drop of 64, and 64 divided by 400 is 16 percent. But shipments also fell, so the rate is the number that matters.

  • Week 1 return rate: 400 divided by 20,000 = 2.0 percent.
  • Week 2 return rate: 336 divided by 12,000 = 2.8 percent.

The return rate rose from 2.0 percent to 2.8 percent, an increase of 0.8 percentage points, which is a 40 percent relative increase. Returns got worse, not better. The right response is to reply with the rate calculation, say plainly that the headline is misleading, and ask what changed in week 2.

How should you answer the written and video parts?

Some simulation tasks ask you to write a short message rather than pick an option. Three rules cover most of them.

Lead with the decision or the answer, not the background. Give the reason in one sentence, with a number if you have one. Then state what you will do next and by when. Amazon’s interview guidance points candidates at behavioural questions and the STAR method, and the same discipline of situation, task, action and result keeps a written simulation answer short and specific.

Do not write a paragraph apologising or hedging. A message that says what happened, what you are doing about it, and when the recipient will hear next is a stronger answer than one that lists every consideration you weighed.

How do you prepare for the Amazon Work Simulation?

  • Read the 16 Leadership Principles once, then practise applying two or three of them to a decision. Recitation does not help; application does.
  • Practise ranking tasks against each other. The skill is deciding what not to do, and it is the same skill tested in our situational judgement test guide.
  • Practise reading a table and converting counts into rates. Most data traps in simulations are rate versus count, or percentage points versus percent.
  • Book the full window. For a full-time software role Amazon advises up to two hours of uninterrupted time, so do not start it 45 minutes before a lecture.
  • Treat the Workstyles Assessment as honest self-report. It is short at around 15 minutes, and consistency across items matters more than picking heroic answers.
